What You Will Learn
Overview:
Rethinking Bias is a transformative and engaging course designed for everyone in an organization, from team members to senior leaders, to help recognize, understand and actively manage bias in daily interactions. In this course, you'll explore bias in fresh, unique ways that will expand your perspective and prompt you to think about bias like never before. Through vivid metaphors, practical tools and self-reflective exercises, participants will uncover how biases form, how they subtly influence decision-making and, most importantly, how they can be transformed into opportunities for growth and inclusion. Each section delves into a unique aspect of bias—its roots, its presence in daily life, the subtleties of implicit bias, the art of listening without judgment and strategies for promoting positive change. With a clear action plan in hand, participants will leave empowered to build a culture where every individual’s value is recognized and celebrated.
Expected Outcomes
Participants in the Rethinking Bias course will develop heightened awareness of their own biases, fostering a more inclusive approach to interactions across the organization. They’ll gain insight into different types of bias—such as confirmation, affinity, attribution and implicit biases—and how these influence team dynamics. With enhanced communication and listening skills, participants will engage more openly and collaboratively, promoting a culture of dignity, respect and opportunity for all.
Armed with practical strategies to identify and challenge bias, participants will leave prepared to drive positive change within their teams. Each will also create a personalized action plan, setting goals to manage bias and build inclusivity, with support from Translator’s Consulting Group (TCG) resources.
Objectives:
Explore Bias Through Metaphor and Storytelling
Using the relatable “bees and butterflies” metaphor, participants will identify how natural human biases shape responses and decisions, learning to balance these reactions to better recognize and appreciate diverse perspectives.
Identify and Reflect on Everyday Biases
Through interactive examples of confirmation, affinity and attribution biases, participants will gain insight into how these biases influence their views, with exercises to connect these realizations to daily interactions.
Uncover the Layers of Implicit Bias
This session guides participants in recognizing the unconscious biases beneath the surface, using tools like the Drama Triangle to explore roles such as Victim, Villain and Hero, and to see how these roles can limit understanding and collaboration.
Use Listening as a Tool for Inclusivity
Participants will practice active listening techniques, such as the 8-Second Rule, Curiosity and the Reporter Technique, discovering how these skills help reduce bias, deepen understanding and build trust across teams.
Champion Change with Clear, Inclusive Strategies
Participants will learn practical approaches to advocating for an inclusive workplace—clarifying standards, fostering open meetings and creating channels for feedback—all essential in promoting a culture that values every voice.
Create a Personal Action Plan for Lasting Impact
